ABSTRACT

This research intends to investigate the theme of change and development of adolescents in Chozi Langu (Mogambi, 2014) and Dunia Mashaka Makuu (Omar, 2015). The research has investigated the character, situation, feelings and health change and development of the adolescents between the ages of 10 to 19 years. The issues investigated are parenting, poverty among others that influence the character change in adolescents. The research is guided by the tenets of Realism theory Luckas (1972) which has been modified by Wamitila (2002), Ntaragwi (2004), Wafula and Njogu (2007) and others. It stresses on the depiction of life and society as it exists. The tenets of this theory have been used to investigate the different challenges that the adolescents face in the society and how they solve them. The research is also guided by the Psychosocial theory by Erickson (1950). He expanded and refined in later books; Erickson (1982) and Erickson and Erickson (1998). It was modified by Cherry (2017), McLeod (2013) and others. The Psychosocial theory stresses on the importance of social interaction and relationship in the development and growth of human beings. It has been used to investigate the theme of change and development of adolescents. The researcher has used purposive sampling to select the novels. Data was collected in the library through comprehensive reading of sampled novels in order to analyze the theme of change and development of adolescents. Also, thesis and other materials related to the topic were read. The collected data has been analyzed descriptively in line with the objectives and by the tenets of the theories of the study. Lastly, the results are presented by discussion method. The research project has been presented in five chapters: the first chapter covers the introduction, statement of the problem, scope, literature review and theoretical framework. Chapter two shows the types of change and development of adolescents in the texts, Chapter three investigates the challenges that the adolescents face in the society and their solutions, the fourth chapter investigates the factors that influence the progress of adolescent characters and lastly, the fifth chapter covers summary, conclusions and recommendations. The research intends to benefit social analysts, literature authors and adolescents because it has depicted the roles of each one of them in bringing positive change and development among the adolescents.
