Parents’ Social- Economic Status and Students’ Subject Selection at “A” Level in Secondary Schools of Lwamaggwa Sub County Rakai District

ABSTRACT This paper is set out to Investigate the relationship between Parents’ sodoeconomlc status and students’ subject selection at “A” level. The study employed descilptive correlation design sInce It was set to examine the relationship between the dependent and independent variable. The Population was characterized by parents and students of the three secondary schools In Lwamaggwa, the study targeted students in form five (5.5) having the both parents. The objectives of this study were; to determIne the profile of respondents, to determine the level of sodoeconomic status of parents and to determine the level of sodo economic status and students’ subject selection at “A” level in Lwamaggwa Sub County. The study found out that majority of parents are secondary school graduates (35.59%), and least being degree of graduates (13.56%). The income level Indices showed that most parents are medium Income earners (33.59%) and the least high income earners at (5.08%). As for employment status, most parents are self employed (30.51%) and the least beIng part-timers at (3.39%). From the study, It can be conduded that the parents of Lwamaggwa Sub County many are above forty years of age (40 years) with low Education levels and low income levels. The Ostudy also reveals that there Is no significant relationships between parents sodoeconomic status and students’ subject selection at A’ level In Lwamaggwa Sub County. According to the study, parents of Lwamaggwa Sub County deserve to access refresher to improve their awareness in order to influence their children’s subject selection. v
