PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTORS IMPACTS ON PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND MARITAL SATISFACTION IN NIGERIA: A REVIEW

This review examines the psycho-social factors influencing psychological well-being and marital satisfaction in Nigeria. Marital satisfaction is often tied to various social, environmental, and cultural elements that shape the dynamics of marriage. The paper explores how these factors, such as expectations regarding children, financial stability, gender roles, cultural traditions, and inter-tribal and inter-religious unions, impact both the psychological health of individuals in a marriage and the overall fulfillment derived from the relationship. It highlights how evolving societal norms, particularly around gender equality and individualism, challenge traditional marriage expectations in Nigeria, contributing to shifts in marital satisfaction. Additionally, the review underscores the reciprocal relationship between psychological well-being and marital contentment, illustrating how psycho-social factors either enhance or deteriorate the quality of a marriage. The findings indicate that a comprehensive understanding of these interactions is critical for effective marriage counseling and the promotion of psychological and marital well-being in Nigeria.
