Research Designs, Types Of Research Designs, Characteristics Of Good Research Design

RESEARCH DESIGNS

Refers to the structuring of investigation. with the aid of identifying variables and their relationships to one another. Desiring a research involves organizing the collection and analysis of data to fulfill the purpose of research so as to provide the information required.

Research design is an outline or a scheme that serves as a useful guide to the researcher in his or her effort to generate data for the study.

Research design are used in other to demonstrate how the variables of the proposed research will be observed, controlled or manipulated to generate the necessary data for the study.

Research design are also used as a guide for data collections and interpretations as well as in reporting research findings.

TYPES OF RESEARCH DESIGNS

There are basically two types of research design, these are:

1. The survey design (no control over variables and the environment)

2. Experimental design

1. Survey Design: Focuses on the population or the universe for the research. In survey design, data is collected from the population for intensive studies and analysis. The survey researcher is interested in some characteristics of the population or the universe using a carefully selected sample or sub-set of the populations for the study.

The manner of selecting the sample will determine his/her ability to generalize the findings of the study for the entire population.

A major characteristic of all survey design is that the researcher has no control of the variables and the research environment.

The researcher is only interested in observing only what is happening to the selected sample of the populations or the variables of the study without any attempt to manipulated or control them.
