ABSTRACT
The study examined the contribution of school heads on teachers` motivation in
Tanzania from the perception and experiences of school heads and teachers of four
selected ward based secondary schools in Mafinga town council. Herzberg‟s Two
Factor theory was used as theoretical framework. The study responded to specific
objectives by: identifying and examining the most effective factors that motivate
teachers, examine the strategies employed by schools heads in motivating teachers
and determine the constraints that face schools heads in the implementation of
teacher‟s motivation strategies in ward- based secondary schools. Questionnaires,
interviews and documentary review were used to collect data from 44 teachers and
schools heads from 4 ward based- secondary schools in Mafinga town council. The
results of the findings have revealed that the most effective factors for teachers`
motivation were: good working condition, financial compensation, work promotion,
community‟s perception and secondary education policy. The most effective
strategies for the school heads to use were: provision of teaching and learning
materials and resources, involving teachers in decision making, supervision,
professional development and rewarding system; while among the constraints faced
the schools heads in the implementation of teachers` motivation strategies was the
insufficient of fund. This study recommends that schools heads should ensure the
improvement of school environment as well as bolstering teachers‟ capability to
develop teaching and learning materials. The study suggests that the Ministry of
Education and Vocational Training should ensure timely remuneration of teachers
and devise a way to generate income that can be used to pay allowances for the
teachers who work beyond the allocated time.
