ABSTRACT The research was carried out to find the effects of nearby markets on academic performances of pupils in Alito sub-county. The study was carried out m Alito sub-county which has seventeen primary schools of which five schools were sampled and the participants for the study include; S headteachers, 20 P.4, P.S, P.6 and P.7 class teachers and 20 pupils of P.4, P.S, P6 and P.7 pupils from sampled schools The data were collected using questionnaires set for the headteacher, P4, PS, P6 and P7 class teachers and pupils from P4, PS, P6 and P7. Observation was done by the researcher following the observation check list and interview. The collected data were processed by tabulating them and finally computing to percentage. The data were synthesized and analyised into percentage to provide deduction and conclusions. The common causes of decline in academic performances were found to be petty business, domestic work, lack of parental support, shortage of teachers and poor methods of teaching The common effects of markets on academic performances were found to be absenteeism from schools by some pupils, poor performance domestic engagement by pupils, late coming to school and school drop out. The common possible ways of improving on academic performances of pupils were found to be sensiiization of parents, refresher courses by teachers, parental support and provision of scholastic materials by government. The significant of the study were stated that all stake holders in education •will be enlighten about the problems schools are facing concerning the nearby markets. Education at the primary level is the base of education therefore; good foundation begins at this level. But the research could also be done in other levels other than primary level of education. A.c~ording to this research, it has been concluded that schools which markels are created near them were performing badly in P.L.E while schools which has no nearby market were performing well in P.L.E in Alito sub-county.
