ABSTRACT The paper presents the design and local manufacture of a mechanized extruder for electrode coating.
ABSTRACT The observed poor quality of graduates of some Nigerian Universities in recent times has been partly traced to in adequacies of the National University Admission Examination System. In this study an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model. for predicting the likely performance of a and date being considered for admission into the university was developed and tested.
ABSTRACT The job scheduling mathematical model was applied to small scale oil winning processing in this paper with a view to develop a framework for the proper scheduling of jobs (orders) in oil winning processing firm in Nigeria. The problem is addressed by supposing we have (n) customers to be served (where n is large); in what way should customers’ order be processed such that the firm’s profit is maximized while the customers are not unnecessarily delayed? The paper addressed the pro...
ABSTRACT This paper considers the problem of scheduling in flow-shop by Johnson's Algorithm method and Genetic Algorithm method to find an optimal sequence for n jobs m-machine problem based on minimum elapsed time.
ABSTRACT Abrasive materials are materials of extreme hardness that are used to shape other materials by a grinding or abrading action and they are used either as loose grains, as grinding wheels, or as coatings on cloth or paper. A grinding wheel is made of very small, sharp and hard silicon carbide abrasive particles or grits held together by strong porous bond. The manufacture of silicon carbide abrasives and grinding wheel in Nigeria has been severely impeded by the difficulty of identifyi...
ABSTRACT Lack of affordable, efficient, and user friendly inventory management tools, for adequate planning has been identified as a major cause of the high inventory cost in many Nigerian manufacturing firms. This study focuses on the development of a Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) that can be used by the local industries for inventory management in a job shop manufacturing environment. Four types of lotsizing techniques were analyzed and MRP algorithms developed for each of these lot...
ABSTRACT This paper proposes a set sequencing heuristic solution for the travelling saIesman problem (TSP). It attempts to first select, preferably a set of M smallest elements of the TSP matrix and then form a sequence. A computer code of the procedure was developed in Fortran 77 and used to examine its efficiency and relative effectiveness. It was found to be as effective as, but more efficient than the best of the nearest neighbourhood heuristics.
Abstract Scheduling models based on efficient resources utilization without sufficient consideration for customer satisfaction or vice-visa is inadequate in many real-life multi-criteria scheduling problems. This work was aimed at the development of a bi-criteria algorithm for the simultaneous optimization of Makespan (Cmax) and Number of tardy jobs (NT) in a single machine problem with Sequence dependent set-up time. An existing single criterion algorithm, the Set Sequencing Algorithm, was ...
ABSTRACT Optimal allocation of products to downstream locations is a major requirement for minimizing the distribution costs associated with supply chain systems. Unfortunately many supply chain managers rely on, their intuition and feelings to make these allocation decisions. In this study a mathematical model was developed for minimizing the distribution cost in a multi-product 2-echleon supply chain system. The distribution system of a leading bottling plant in Nigeria was studied to under...
ABSTRACT The frequent occurrence of fire accidents in commercial complexes has become a serious problem in Nigeria. The development of a quantitative tool for evaluating the proneness of a commercial complex to so called 'market fires' is the focus of this study. A rigorous review of the literature was carried to identify and characterize some existing risk analysis models applicable to the problem. Some past fire disasters were analyzed. Using the insight gained from the above, a mathematica...
ABSTRACT This study is about the use of automated material handling 5ystem to eliminate bottlenecks on production line In order to achieve higher system capacity utilization. It was applied to the milling plant of a food processing company. Detailed study of the milling plant work system's parameters was carried out to give a basis for the selection of a suitable new transfer system Facility layout analysis to determine floor space requirement. as well as work system design analysis and cost/...
ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The safety plugs presently used on our equipment-in the Nigerian industries are wholly imported. This research is aimed therefore at developing safety fuse plugs, using locally available materials that will compare favourably with the imported safety fuse plugs. Minerals from various mining sites in the country and laboratory samples were collected. Beneficiation processes were carried out on the samples using foundry equipments which included electric furnace, tongs, and cr...
ABSTRACT The objective of this project is to design and fabricate a low cost water distiller capable of producing water that is pure in all ramifications for domestic and commercial consumers. The critical components of the distiller are made of stainless steel. These parts include the tank, the lid/condenser and the distilled water collector. Selection of material used is based on both their physical and chemical properties. The tank has a square base and the opening end of the tank is slant...
Abstract Song list generation, a crucial component of m us IC information retrieva I system. has been carried out based on users experiences and bias with no quantitative method to guarantee the generation and repeatability or harmonious arrangements. In this study, the problem of generating harmonious song-list has been modelled as a Single Machine Set-up Problem (MSP) and a solution software developed. Music factors that affect user perception and cognition of a smooth transition were iden...
ABSTRACT This study examines the manufacturing capabilities of the Nigerian furniture industry. An extensive review of literature was carried on wood; structure, seasoning types, properties and finishing, Also" a review on wood furniture manufacturing processes, In terms of tools. equipments, design, ergonomics, finishing was carried out. Interview, observation, discussion and survey method " were used for data gathering .from some selected furniture workshops in Lagos: An assessment of the f...
