The schistosomes live i1n the blood vessels associated with the intestine and urinary bladd1er where they reproduce sexually.Schistosomiasis is one of the most wide spread parasitic disease that put about 400-600 million people worldwide at risk and has already infected about 200 million people. The disease is endemic in 74 countries of the worl...
ABSTRACTThis study was carried out to investigate the nutritional value and the antibacterial activity of bitter kola, (Garcinia kola). The result of the proximate analysis shows that bitter kola contains 51.95% moisture, 5.55% Ash, 9.75% crude fibers, 4.65% crude fat, 7.35% crude protein and 20.85% carbohydrate. The anti-bacterial activity shows that bitter kola can inhibit the E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus with diameter zone of inhibition of 14mm and 16mm respectively. There was no inhi...

ABSTRACTThis study was conducted to examine the fungi present in spoilt onion bulb. Five different sample of spoilt onion bulb were blended together and suspended in sterilized distilled water which was used to inoculate Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA). Four different fungi were isolated from the sample and the morphological characteristics shows that the isolate belong to the following genera: Alternaria sp., Aspergillius sp., Penicillium sp., and Rhizopus sp. These fungi may have been respons...
AbstractThe ectoparasitic infestation of free range domestic fowls were surveyed between August and November, 2014. A total of 105 ectoparasites belonging to four species of two genera were collected. These were made up of three lice and one ixodid tick. The percentage occurrence of these parasites are: Menacanthus stramineus (50.5%), Rhipicephalus saguineus (29.5%), Damalinia ovis (12.4%) and Lipeurus caponis (7.6%). Lice were the most prevalent and predominant of the ectoparasites of the 35...
ABSTRACT Entrohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a major food borne pathogen causing severe disease in humans worldwide. Healthy cattle are the reservoir of Escherichia coli O157:H7, and bovine food products and fresh produce contaminated with bovine waste are the most common source for disease out breaks in the United States. Escherichia coli O157:H7 also survives well in the environment. The abilities to cause human disease, colonize the bovine gastrointestinal tract, and require tha...
ABSTRACT The microbiological assessment of Garri, sold in two different markets in Benin City metropolis, was carried out using the pour plate technique. The mean total count ranged from 15.0 to 29.4 × 104 cfu/g in Oba market and Santana market respectively. A total of six organisms were identified in Santana Market samples while a total of ten probable organisms were identified from Oba market sample, using their morphological characteristics on Nutrient Agar plate. The use of hygie...
ABSTRACT 40 nasal samples were collected from apparently healthy males students at Eguare Secondary School, Ekpoma, whose ages fell within the ranges of 15-20 years were selected and screened for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans using Mannitol Salt Agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar respectively. A total of 15 (37.5%) samples were positive of S. aureus while no growth was observed for Candida albicans . The disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) on nutrient agar wa...
INTRODUCTION Ugba also called ukpaka is a popular food delicacy in Nigeria especially among Ibo ethnic group. It is rich in protein and is obtained by a solid state fermentation of the seed of African oil bean tree (Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth). ABSTRACT The results obtained from this research work shows that land snails sold in Ekpoma market contains some pathogenic microorganisms. A total of fifty samples were bought from 10 different local sellers (five snail samples each) in Ekpoma old market and the new market. The total viable count of bacteria ranged from 2.2 x 108 cfu/g - 8.2 x 108 cfu/g. The lowest was recorded in sample I having a total bacteria count of 2.2 x 108 cfu/g and the highest count was observed in sample D obtai...
ABSTRACT Despite more than 100 years of research since the discovery of malaria parasite in human blood, it still remains one of the most common vector-borne diseases widespread in tropical and subtropical regions and constituting a major global health problem. This deadly parasitic disease is caused by the plasmodial parasite species which is vectored by female Anopheles mosquito and can be transmitted to people of all ages. ABSTRACTThe isolation, identification and characterization of bacteria from organic waste were carried out. Sawdust waste (plant organic waste source) and abattoir waste water (animal organic waste source) samples were collected. The media used were nutrient agar for total aerobic plate count, McConkey agar for coliform count and cellulolytic media for cellulolytic count. The pour plate method was employed. Colonial morphology, gram staining and biochemical tests were used for the identificat...
