The use of catechins as biochemical markers in diversity studies of tea (Camellia sinensis)

Abstract/Overview The concentrations of catechins in a Kenyan tea germplasm collection of 102 accessions were determined by HPLC. Total green leaf catechin concentrations and the ratio of dihydroxylated to trihydroxylated catechins were used to establish genetic differentiation in the germplasm. Upon multivariate analysis, accumulation of the various catechins separated the tea clones into 3 major and 5 minor groups according to their phylogenetic origins. The Cambod teas had the highest ...

Biochemical differentiation in Camellia sinensis and its wild relatives as revealed by isozyme and catechin patterns

Abstract/Overview The variation in three NADP-linked dehydrogenase enzymes; glucose-6-phosphate dehydro- genase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and shikimate dehydrogenase as well as alpha and beta esterases was determined in 24 cultivars of Camellia sinensis and 2 other species of Camellia; C. japonica and C. irrawadiensis, using specific activity staining. The isozyme pro- files partitioned the cultivars according to their phylogenetic origins; (China, Assam, Cambodia and Japan). At...

High fluoride water in Bondo-Rarieda area of Siaya County, Kenya: a hydro-geological implication on public health in the Lake Victoria basin

Abstract/Overview Background: Only a few studies to evaluate groundwater fluoride in Eastern Africa have been undertaken outsidethe volcanic belt of the Great Eastern Africa Rift Valley. The extent and impact of water fluoride outside theseregions therefore remain unclear. The current study evaluated fluoride levels in household water sources in Bondo-Rarieda Area in the Kenyan part of the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) and highlighted the risk posed by waterfluoride to the resident communitie...

EFFECT OF DILUTE SULFURIC ACID PRE-TREATMENT ON BIO-ETHANOL PRODUCTION FROM Phaseolus vulgaris DRY SEED POD USING Saccharomyces cerevisiae AS INOCULANT

Abstract: Sustaining fossil fuel and the formation of a sizeable environment are trials maintained through the production of renewable energy as a biofuel. Bioethanol is one of the mainly important alternative sources of energy, which is produced from the several of cheapest materials includes starch, lignocellulose, celluloses, and other different waste materials especially agro waste. Dilute sulphuric acid pretreatment of lignocellulosic material is the main process in ethanol production d...

Production and Characterization of Pectinase from Pectinolytic Fungi Cultivated on Mango peels and Pectin Subjected to Submerged Fermentation

Abstract: Pectinases are the group of enzymes that degrade pectin. This study was conducted with the aim of isolation of efficient pectinase producing pectinoloytic fungi from the decaying vegetable and fruit soil containing decomposing mango peels using extracted mango peels pectin as a growth substrate under submerged fermentation, determining optimum pectinase production conditions and characterizing of ammonium sulphate precipitated pectinase activity with regards to some physicochemical...

OPTIMIZING THE PRODUCTION OF BIO-ETHANOL FROM Prosopis juliflora LEAVES USING Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract: Production of bio-ethanol from Lingocellulosic materials is naturally abundunt renewable resources that can potentially provide a long-term sustainable fuel supply. Prosopis juliflora, an invasive plant is one source of lignocellosic materials to serve as feedstock for bio-ethanol production. With the objective of evaluating its potential for bio-ethanol production, differen concentrations (10g, 20g, 30g, and 40g) of P. juliflora leaves treated with dilute sulfuric acid and untreat...

POLYPHENOLIC ANALYSIS AND ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF THE ETHIOPIAN SPICES, Foeniculum vulgare Mill. And Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry

Abstract: Natural products, especially those of spices origin, have always been an important source of therapeutic agents against chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. This study was aimed to analyse polyphenolic metabolites and antioxidant activity of Ethiopian Clove or kirunfud (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr.) and Fennel or ensilal (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) extracts. Seeds of fennel and flower of clove were purchased and extraction was done using chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol a...

PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIALS OF ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI FROM RED BEET (Beta vulgaris L. ) LEAF AND ROOT PEELS

Abstract: The present study was intended to investigate phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activities of endophytic fungi isolates from red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L. )Leaf and Root peels . The red beet leaf and root samples were as potential source of endophytic fungi. The surface of samples were disinfectant. Fungal culturing and identifications of genera were made according to fungal identification manual. The phytochemical screening of methanolic extracts of Endophytic fungal isolate...

ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIALS OF ENDOPHYTIC FUNGI FROM CORIANDER (Coriandrum sativum L.) LEAF AND SEED

Abstract: Endophytes demonstrate great potential sources for new bio active compounds. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to assess biological activities including antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of endophytic fungal extracts from coriander leaves and seeds. The samples were surface sterilized before used as endophytic fungal culture. The result of macroscopic and microscopic characterization of the fungal isolates demonstrated the presence of three genera of endophytic fun...

ORGANIC LIQUID FERTILIZERPRODUCTION FROM GROUNDNUT(ArachishypogaeaL.)HUSK AND BANANA(Musa sapientumL.)PEELSANDTESTING ITS EFFECTIVENESS ON LETTUCE(Lactuca sativa L.) UNDER HYDROPONIC CONDITIO

Abstract: Organic liquid fertilizer not only increases the growth medium ofcrops, but also accelerates the maturation and nutrient quality of the crops. Thus, the present study was aimed at producingorganic liquid fertilizer from banana peels and groundnut husks through aerobic fermentation in open containers. The design of the experment was complete randomized design (CRD) in two replications.Theresults indicated that pH,7.05,EC,0.8,Carbon(C),49.5%,Nitrogen(N),3.62%,C:N,13.71,Phosphorus(P),...

PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES, ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF MANDARIN (Citrus reticulata Blanco.) PEEL AND PULP OIL

Abstract: The citrus peel which is almost one half of the total fruit mass is a rich source of phenolic compounds such as flavanones, flavonols and many polymethoxylated flavones. The growing interest of shifting from the synthetic antimicrobial agents to natural ones has encouraged research on screening of plant material and other vegetable sources to identify new compounds. On account of such justification the present study was aimed to examine physicochemical properties, antioxidant and a...

PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES, ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF TURMERIC (Curcuma longa L.) RHIZOME OIL

Abstract: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) rhizomes, has been widely used for centuries as indigenous medicine for the treatment of a variety of anti-inflammatory conditions and other diseases. Turmeric and its active components (volatile oil and curcuminoids) have unique antioxidant, antitumorigenic, anticarcinogenic, antiinflammatory, antimutagenic, antiarthritic and antimicrobial properties. This study was aimed to determine the physicochemical properties, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities...
